Valerian Root

Signs and Symptoms for Nutrient Applications

- Insomnia - Nervous tension - Stress - Anxiety - Gastrointestinal cramps

Clinical Applications/Research
Valerian Root

Valerian root is used for nervous tension, restlessness, stress, anxiety, gastrointestinal cramps, and difficulty getting to sleep (only promotes sleep; not a soporific) (Bisset, NG & Wichtl M eds. Herbal Drugs and Phytopharmaceuticals. Medpharm Scientific Publishers. CRC Press, Boca Raton, Fla. 1989). Valerian has been shown in clinical trials to improve sleep quality and relieve insomnia (Lindahl O & Lindwall L. Pharmacol Biochem Behav 1989;32(4):1065-1066; Dressing H. et al. Therapiewoche 1992;42:726-736). In a double-blind crossover study of 128 people given 400 mg valerian, the valerian produced a significant improvement in sleep quality (Leathwood PD et al. Pharmacol Biochem Behav 1982;17:65). In another study, 450 mg produced similar results against placebo, however 900 mg did not produce any further improvement; sleep latency was reduced, sleep quality improved, and nighttime awakenings reduced (Leathwood PD & Chauffard F. Planta Med 1985;51:144). Valerian seems to be as effective in reducing sleep latency as small doses of barbiturates or benzodiazepines, but in contrast reduces the morning sleepiness seen with those drugs (Leathwood PD & Chauffard F. Planta Med 1985;51:144).

Contraindications/Toxicology

The German Commission E monograph; B anz no. 90, dated 15-05-85 lists no known contraindications or side effects of valerian (Bisset, NG & Wichtl M eds. Herbal Drugs and Phytopharmaceuticals. Medpharm Scientific Publishers. CRC Press, Boca Raton, Fla. 1989). Valeriana officinalis has been classified as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) for food use.
